Have you ever wanted to learn how to produce stunning black and white pictures? Have you tried futzing around with the black and white option on your camera, only to switch back in frustration after a few tries? Are you looking for an excuse to walk around and take pictures with a professional photographer who will give you feedback on the spot? This class is for you. This class will serve as an introduction to how to “see” in black and white. Taking good black and white pictures isn’t as simple as switching your digital camera’s settings and taking all the shots you normally would; black and white pictures as a medium present a whole new mode of creative expression that you need to practice with to get good at.

This class will take place over four sessions. The first session will be a general lecture and introduction to the medium and the skills you need to develop to take advantage of it. The next three sessions will be field trips to locations of the instructors’ choosing, where students will take pictures and receive immediate feedback on their work.

Class Goals:

The goal of this class is to have students feel comfortable seeing the world in terms of black and white photography opportunities, so that they can continue to explore the medium.

This class requires students to have a passion for photography and a digital camera with a black and white mode. Some experience with the camera is required, and hobbyist-level experience is fine.

None. Digital camera with black & white mode required.
