Do you have some old t-shirts you no longer wear because they have a few holes or stains? Don’t throw them away! Turn them into yarn to make a funky yet sturdy, functional basket. In the first session, students will make yarn with their own old t-shirts. Then they will learn how to make a basket base with a clothesline. In the second session, students will learn various patterns possible with the twining technique and how to make a rim to finish the basket. Students are encouraged to share their yarn to have a variety of colors. Finished dimensions will vary.
Students will learn: How to make t-shirt yarn, how to make a simple basket base, basic twining, reverse twining, three-rod wale, how to create patterns using different colors, how to make a braided rim. Students will have the option of adding funky embellishments to their basket.
Teacher will provide: Clothesline, printed directions, plastic sewing clips, and plastic yarn needles. Students should bring: Old t-shirts or other jersey garments, at least two, preferably in different, complementary colors. More is better!
