Tool Training: Rough to Smooth – Using the Miter Saw, Bandsaw, Jointer, Planer and Sanders

March 25, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm

|Recurring Class (See all)
Wednesdays; 3/11/20 - 3/25/20

Class Description
After selecting and purchasing lumber, the next step in any woodworking project is to flatten and straighten the stock. Not that long ago, this work was laboriously done by hand. Fortunately, there are four machines available today that are specifically designed to take rough sawn lumber and process it into boards that are straight, flat, and true! The miter saw, band saw, jointer, and planer form a workflow that any woodworker interested in working with solid wood should know how to use.

The final step in your project might include sanding final shape on a belt sander, disk sander, or spindle sander. This class covers the maintenance and safe operation of these tools, and the techniques for using them to dimension rough stock, shape it, and smooth the final shape. Students will get checked out on the use of these tools at the end of the course, demonstrating that they are prepared to use these tools unsupervised as members at Artisan’s Asylum or in their own shops.

Students will arrange getting checked out on the equipment after the second class.

Class Goals
Students will acquire the following knowledge and skills:

– Selecting the best lumber appropriate to their project at the lumber yard.
– Understand the physical structure of wood and how it affects machining.
– Knowledge of how trees are converted into lumber, including how they are cut, sized, graded and sold.
– Identification of grain direction and how to orient the board to the machine.
– Safe use of the jointer to smooth the board and remove cup, bow, crook, and twist.
– Safe use of the planer to create a second smooth face parallel to the first.
– Adjustment of the guide mechanism of the band saw for optimal performance.
– Removal and installation of bandsaw blades.
– Safe cutting rip cuts and curves on the bandsaws.
– Safe use of the compound sliding miter saw to make accurate cross cuts, bevels, and miters.
– Safe use of the sanders to finish off edges and convex and concave curves.
