Introduction to ShopBot CNC Router and VCarve

March 8 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

A hybrid course teaching VCarve Tool Pathing and the ShopBot.
Virtual: March 8th and 10th @ 6:00PM; On-Site: March 11th @ 6PM

Learn to use the Asylum’s ShopBot CNC Router, and the easy-to-use VCarve Pro – Edition CAM package for creating tool cut paths from 2D and 3D CAD drawing.

The Asylum’s ShopBot is a PRSalpha 96×48 model with full 3-axis CNC capability and a 8ft x 4ft x 6in work envelope. It can cut wood, plastic, plywood, MDF, and other materials.

This session will run using a hybrid model with two session taught virtually and one at our facility on the ShopBot machine. The virtual sessions will cover CAM toolpathing and basic safety of the CNC machine prior to the onsite session. During the third on-site session, we will review machine usage and safety.

Prior experience with a CAD or vector drawing software program which can output DXF format files, such as Inkscape, Illustrator, AutoCAD, or Solidworks is helpful, but not required.

The safety of our community, members, and instructors is our greatest priority. We ask all participants in this workshop to commit to a reduced level activity leading up to and during this workshop in our facility.

Students must wear a mask that complies with our updated safety policies. Mask must be a 3-ply surgical mask, KN95 disposable mask, N95 mask, or a tighly woven cloth mask with a filter insert. Students not wearing the appropriate masks will be asked to purchase one from our facility before joining the session.

Please wear shop-appropriate clothing (close-toed shoes, long pants, no loose clothing, long hair tied back, etc..) something with which to take notes. A USB thumb drive to store projects and toolpaths is helpful.

When you arrive please be sure to:

– Wear an approved safety mask at all times

– Adhere to social distancing rules

– Be aware that this class has capacity limits to ensure your safety

– Limit your activities leading up to and during the class sessions so that you and your classmates stay safe
