The Artisan’s Asylum’s bylaws provide for the election of two Member Directors on the A2 Board of Directors. One seat is currently vacant. This is great opportunity for an individual passionate about the mission and vision of the organization to contribute their voice and energy to organization leadership. The position description follows. The nomination process for Member Director begins on October 10 and runs through October 23.


Artisans’ Asylum Board Member Job Description

Mission
Artisan’s Asylum’s mission is to support and promote the teaching, learning and practice of fabrication. For more information, please Artisan’s Asylum’s website at www.artisansasylum.com.

Position
The Board supports the work of Artisan’s Asylum and provides mission-based leadership and strategic governance. Day-to-day operations are led by Artisan’s Asylum’s Executive Director (ED) and the Board-ED relationship is a partnership; appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected.

Specific Board Member responsibilities include:

  • Leadership, governance and oversight including development of, and periodic updates to the organization’s strategic plan.
  • Serving as a trusted advisor to the ED as s/he develops and implements Artisan’s Asylum’s strategic plan.
  • Approving Artisan’s Asylum’s annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions; being informed of, and meeting all, legal and fiduciary responsibilities.
  • Reviewing outcomes and metrics created by Artisan’s Asylum for evaluating its impact, and regularly measuring its performance and effectiveness using those metrics.
  • Reviewing agenda and supporting materials prior to board and committee meetings.
  • Contributing to an annual performance evaluation of the Executive Director.
  • Assisting the ED and board chair in identifying and recruiting other Board Members.
  • Partnering with the ED and other board members to ensure that board resolutions are carried out.
  • Serving on committees or task forces and taking on special assignments.
  • Representing Artisan’s Asylum to stakeholders; acting as an ambassador for the organization.
  • Ensuring Artisan’s Asylum’s commitment to a diverse board and staff that reflects the communities Artisan’s Asylum serves.
  • Serving as a voice to Artisan’s Asylum’s members and seeking member input to inform board decision-making.

Fundraising
Artisan’s Asylum Board Members will consider Artisan’s Asylum a philanthropic priority and give or get  annual gifts that reflect that priority. So that Artisan’s Asylum can credibly solicit contributions from foundations, organizations, and individuals, Artisan’s Asylum expects to have 100 percent of Board Members make  an annual contribution that is commensurate with their capacity. Board members will also be expected to support the Executive Director in seeking additional philanthropic gifts from the broader community.

Board Terms and Meetings
Board terms/participation Artisan’s Asylum’s Board Members will serve a two-year term to be eligible for re-appointment for up to four additional terms.

Board meetings will be held quarterly and committee meetings will be held in coordination with full board meetings.

Qualifications
This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about Artisan’s Asylum’s mission and who has a track record of community, board, or other forms of leadership.

Selected Board Members will have achieved leadership stature in artistic creativity,  business, government, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector. His/her accomplishments will allow him/her to attract other well-qualified, high-performing Board Members and enhance the credibility of the organization’s standing. Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:

  • Extensive professional experience with significant executive leadership or other demonstrated leadership potential.
  • A distinct professional skill set that advances the mission of Artisan’s Asylum and strengthens accountability, for example finance, legal expertise, communications and business development and fundraising.
  • Accomplishments in business, government, philanthropy, artistic or the nonprofit sector.
  • A commitment to and understanding of Artisan’s Asylum’s beneficiaries, preferably based on experience.
  • Savvy diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals.
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for improving the lives of Artisan’s Asylum’s members, community partners and participants.

Service on Artisan’s Asylum’s Board of Directors is without remuneration, except for administrative support, travel, and accommodation costs in relation to Board Members’ duties.
