Where are you located?
We are located at 10 Tyler Street, Somerville, Massachusetts 02143. We are a 5-minute walk from Union Square, a 20-minute walk from Porter Square, and a 24 minute walk from Harvard. Here is a link to directions and parking information.
Can I just drop in to see the space?
We offer tours at set times each day: see tour times here.
I would like to bring my group/organization/school/program to tour Artisan’s Asylum. How do I set that up?
To arrange a specialized tour for your group, send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org with your request. We ask for a per person fee for off-hours tours.
Where should I park?
Parking is available around the corner on Dane Street. Parking is unassigned. We ask that Artisan’s Asylum members, students, and guests avoid parking on the street except for active loading and unloading.
Are you easily accessible through the MBTA?
We are! We have several bus lines nearby and are walking/biking distance from both Porter and Harvard Sqaure T stops. See here for more info.
Do you have bike racks?
We do! They are located to the right of our main entrance under the trees. We do not have indoor bike parking.

Do you have any smaller day pass packages?
Five day passes is our smallest package. We’re excited to offer day pass options for access to our shops, but only if you are willing to invest in staying up to date on shop safety procedures, new tools and any changes to our policies.
Do I have to use my day passes by a certain date?
Yes – Day pass packages expire 90 days after the date of purchase.
Can I share my day pass package with other people?
No – day pass packages cannot be shared and are not transferrable.
What kind of tools do you have?
We have tools for electronics, robotics, woodworking, jewelry & metalworking, welding, laser cutting, 3D printing, machining, bicycle maintenance, fiber arts, screen printing, metal casting and more. We have a list of our major equipment here.
Can I use Artisan’s tools without having to take a class?
Monthly and daily members have access to our tools but are required to demonstrate familiarity with equipment before being allowed to use it unsupervised through our tool testing certification process. This is both to protect our equipment and our members. See our Tool Testing page for more information.
What is tool testing?
Testing is for people ready to demonstrate familiarity and safe use of our tools. You may qualify for testing without training depending on your experience. Some of our tools require both training and testing despite prior experience. See our Tool Testing page for more information.
What materials are available for general use?
Members are expected to supply their own materials. We do have a very productive scrap wood bin and a ton of small electronic components that are available for general use. Occasionally you can scrounge something good from the metal scrap bin as well.
I’ve never made anything before, is that OK?
Absolutely! Most of our classes are designed to teach people who have little or no experience with the topic. Our instructors and members are enthusiastic about their areas of knowledge and love to get new people making. Any prerequisites for classes will be listed in the description of the class on the Eventbrite registration page.
Do I have to be a member to take classes at Artisan’s?
No – All of our classes, tool trainings and testing are open to the public and do not require membership to attend.
When are you offering X class again?
If a class is not available for registration, we are probably working with our instructors and shop leads to schedule and prepare for the next session of the class. The best way to find out about class postings is to sign up for our announcements mailing list.
I have a gift certificate. How do I register for a class or membership?

Is there an age minimum for classes or membership?
All of our classes and membership services are restricted to adults 18+, no exceptions.
I am taking my first class at Artisan’s, what do I expect?

Will I be able to store my projects?
Storage rental is available by the month to individual monthly members. See our Studio and Storage Space page for more information. Some restrictions apply.
Do I need to be a member to rent storage and/or studio space?
Yes, storage and studio space is available for an additional fee to individual monthly members only. See our Studio and Storage Space page for more information. Some restrictions apply.
Is there a waitlist for studio space?
Yes, currently there is a 4-6 month wait for a studio space. There is no commitment or fee to fill out our studio space waiting list. If we contact you and you’re not ready for a space, you’ll stay at the top of the list and will be contacted as spaces become available. Put your name down now!
I’d like to pay to have something built for me. Can you help?
We do not operate as a job shop here at the Asylum, but we do have a number of members who run jobs out of the space. If you’re interested in having something built for you, contact email@example.com and you can see if anyone is interested in taking on the job. Artisan’s Asylum will make no recommendations and takes no responsibility for the quality of work arranged through the have-it-made list — we are simply facilitating communication.
I am starting a makerspace. Can I meet with someone on staff to help me with this?
First step is to check out our Make a Makerspace page for some basic information and resources. If you are local or are able to travel, the best way to learn about our space is to come by for one of our daily tours. If you have more detailed questions or would like to set up a consultation, email them to firstname.lastname@example.org.
What kinds of donations do you accept?
We will gladly accept financial contributions. If you have tools or materials you think might of use to us, please email us at email@example.com.

I’d like to get in touch with someone on staff about X. What is the best way to do that?
You can contact any of our staff directly via email. All of Artisan’s Asylum staff also have weekly office hours; email contacts and links to sign-up via Google calendar appointment here on our staff page.
What do you have for kids?
Due to limitations of our insurance coverage, we cannot provide programming for anyone under the age of 18. Children in the building as guests must be supervised by an adult at all times. We do recommend Parts and Crafts if you are looking for children’s activities in the area.
Can I buy a gift certificate?
We do not currently offer gift certificates. You can purchase a class ticket as a gift by listing them as the attendee when registering on EventBrite. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions.
How do I redeem a gift certificate?
To redeem a gift certificate for a rental or classes, fill out this short redemption form.
We would like to use your space to film our kickstarter videos! Is that cool?
