Class Description
Technical Drawing for Metal Fabrication will teach students the skills that they need to create dimensionally accurate parts in the metal shop. This class is designed to be the next rung on the ladder after Metalworking 101 and 102. We will spend the 1st class session discussing design and drawing techniques and drawing templates for a sample part. In the 2nd and 3rd classes, students will fabricate the part using their templates and the metal shop tools covered in Metalworking 101 and 102, which is a prerequisite for this class.
Class Goals
Students will learn the following skills in this class:
• Selecting drawing tools and media to create metalworking templates
• Basic technical drawing to make templates for parts
• Selecting marking tools for metalworking layout
• Transfer design to the part using the template
• Rough cutting the part
• Grinding to a line
• Fine tuning a part to dimension with file and angle grinder
• Beveling an edge to a line
• Locating and marking for holes
• Drilling and punching holes with accuracy
• Measuring the finished part to compare against the part design
Materials Provided
The instructor will provide a set of drawing tools that the student will keep, as well as the metals for use in the practicum.
Artisan’s Asylum will provide the needed safety equipment, except for the recommended respiratory protection. Students will become abrasive grinding pros in this class, and that means respiratory protection is needed. We recommend that students provide their own half-face respirator, similar to 3M’s 6000 or 7000 series with N95-, N100-, P95- or P100-rated filters. Because respirators must be sized to the wearer, Artisan’s Asylum cannot provide this equipment to students.
