Introduction to Surface Mount Circuit Assembly and Rework

February 27 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Class Description
Would you like to learn modern, surface mount approaches to circuit assembly, but need a quick introduction? Most recent circuit boards rely on ‘surface mount’ (SMD) components, which can result in more compact designs that are easier to produce in larger batches; delving into surface mount assembly seem intimidating, at first — but it doesn’t need to be! This class introduces students to the basic techniques required in order to get up and running with their own DIY surface mount circuit assembly and rework, preparing students for prototyping and building their own SMD circuit board creations.

Class Goals
Students who take this class will learn how to:

– Accomplish SMD assembly and rework using a soldering iron and a hot air gun
– Apply solder paste using various approaches, including syringes and stencils
– Decide among various stencil production techniques
– Select and use tools for placing small SMD parts
– Use a DIY reflow oven for SMD assembly
– Transition to pick-and-place assembly workflows

Materials Provided
Students will be provided with the necessary materials for SMD prototyping, including solderpaste and an example circuit board.
