  • Intermediate Electronics: Circuit Design

    2010 - 08.15

THIS CLASS HAS BEEN CANCELLED due to low enrollment

    Cost: $120 + $3.99 ticket fee

This intermediate electronics course will get you into building, understanding and eventually designing simple yet practical circuits. The class focus will be on both digital and analog circuits, but not on microcontrollers or programming. The course will include lecture and handouts, but will focus more on building and measuring circuits. The course will focus the specifics of the class based on student interests and background, but expect to work on some of the following: reading datasheets, practical breadboarding, RC circuits, logic signals, digital logic, oscillators, operational amplifiers, transistors (CMOS and/or bipolar), audio amplification, passive filters, soldering, use of digital multimeter and oscilloscopes, and circuit debugging strategies.

    Class Goals:

The goal of this class will be to leave students self-sufficient when it comes to learning more about circuit design after the class and researching the components they need to be successful.

    Prerequisites:

At least some qualitative understanding of voltage, current, resistors, capacitors, and diodes. Willingness to learn and make mistakes.

    Materials:

Students will purchase components for projects and should bring or purchase a breadboard. Components will be purchased from the instructor (<$25).

    Instructor Biography: Kevin Sihlanick

Kevin SihlanickKevin Sihlanick is an Electrical Engineer at Analog Devices and holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from Olin College. Kevin’s experience in circuits ranges from robotics and power electronics to FPGAs and custom Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs), with a background in both analog and digital circuitry. Kevin very much enjoyed helping with a microelectronics course back at Olin and being a teaching assistant, and is looking forward to getting back into teaching.
