April is here, and Spring is supposedly around the corner, which means we’re back in events season at Artisan’s Asylum! We have a number of exciting public events coming up within the next month: an autonomous robots design challenge, a science festival open house, and the annual Somerville Open Studios. If you’ve been meaning to come and check out the Asylum for a long time, or you want to come by to see all the new developments and projects people are working on, these are great opportunities.
Cambridge Science Festival Open House & DIY Festival, Sunday April 14, 1-5pm
Also , Artisan’s Asylum will be hosting an Open House and DIY Festival on Sunday, April 14th, from 1-5pm, as part of the Cambridge Science Festival. This will be an opportunity to show off and try out all the science, engineering and technology being invented, practiced, and utilized at the Asylum and in the wider DIY community on a daily basis. Come build balloon-powered cars, learn to solder with SparkFun, make a mosaic out of used computer parts, and more! Autonomous Combat Robot Design Challenge, April 14-21st
Artisan’s Asylum is teaming up with the Cambridge Science Festival and MathWorks to bring combat robots to Boston! Eight teams will have one week to build a 5-10 lb autonomous robot to compete in a public tournament on Sunday, April 21st, at Arts at the Armory in Somerville, MA. Teams will get a kit of parts and programs and access to workshops, a computer lab, and mentorship from world-class robot builders and programmers. Prizes include student edition licenses of MATLAB and Simulink and an AeroQuad Arduino-controlled quadcopter, capable of being autonomously programmed by Simulink, all provided by MathWorks. Somerville Open Studios, May 3-5
For the art and craft side of our community, Somerville Open Studios is coming up the first weekend in May. For three days, the Asylum will be open to the public as community members rove from artist studio to artist studio throughout the city.
