    CNC Machining

    2010 - 08.15

THIS CLASS HAS BEEN CANCELLED due to low enrollment

    Cost: $200 + $5.99 ticket fee

This class is an introduction to the use of a CNC (computer numerically controlled) milling machine. Milling machines are used to create metal parts in Cartesian (X, Y, Z) components such as gearboxes and engineblocks; computer-controlled milling machines are used to both automatically create intricate parts that can’t be made by hand, and create runs of interchangeable parts much faster than manual machining. Computer-controlled milling machines can be used to both make final metal parts and to make tools (such as injection-molding dies) for other machines.

Purchasing admission to this class also admits students to the Artisan’s Asylum Metalworking theme night (Saturdays, 5 PM-10 PM), where students will be able to practice their newfound skils with experienced instructors on-hand to answer questions and help students with projects.

    Class Goals:

The goal of this class will be to introduce students to safe and accurate computer-controlled machining practices, getting them to the point where they can safely use the Asylum CNC milling machine.

    Prerequisites:

Some experience with a manual milling machine (able to change tools, tram in a vise, locate a part).

    Materials:

Students will purchase inexpensive materials from the instructor to complete their final projects.
